Press Release Positive opening operation – now also available for V4 package size S880 – a small but smart snap-action switch Munich. Schaltbau snap-action switches have made themselves a name through wide-spread recognition of their suitability for all safety-related applications. This is due to the special switch design. It ensures high operational reliability under severe conditions. This tradition is being continued even by the V4 package size offspring of the product family: The new mini sized S880 is as well equipped, technically, as its big brothers. It features the same wiping contacts and the same mechanism that forces the normally closed contacts to open at any event. The risk of contact welding or spring failure – a real nightmare when safety circuits are concerned – can thus be minimized to a great extent. Notwithstanding its miniature design, the S880 can be relied on to be up to the task. Snap-action switches are characterised by precise, repeatable switching with millions of cycles whereby the switching speed is virtually independent of the speed of actuation. This indirect switching operation is triggered by the spring-loaded snap-action mechanism of the switch. That is what makes the new S880 especially suited for use with slowly-moving actuators. Where miniaturization is important, the S880 is the V4 snap switch of choice, for example as safety limit switch in medical engineering, in automatic transmission for neutral position, as limit switch for machine, door and system control, as door locking switch in white goods, in electric vehicles, in process automation and many more applications. Wiping, self-cleaning contacts (silver), protection against ingress of dust, humidity and pollutants (IP60 and IP67) all contribute to the high reliability of the switch even at low currents. The S880 is designed for applications up to 6 A conventional thermal current. It is, therefore, also suitable for use in telecommunications engineering and automation. The switch is designed in accordance with international standards IEC 60947-5-1 including annex K, UL and CCC. For worldwide use further approvals are being applied for. The dimensions of the switch are specified by its package size: 20.5 x 6.6 x 9.4 mm (L x D x H). Its weight is approximately ca. 14 g. Depending on the terminal type the temperature range is -40°C to +85°C. Its design life is 1.5 million operating cycles min. S880 Series switches are available with various terminal styles such as flat tabs, leads, solder or PCB terminals. The switch is operated by a standard pushbutton, but leaf levers of various lengths are available as auxiliary actuators. Sample products (sealed to IP40 with solder terminal and leaf lever) are ready for immediate delivery. The company: "Connect – Contact – Control". This is the maxim according to which Schaltbau GmbH develops and manufactures electromechanical components for rail technology and industry applications. Founded in 1929, the company now has six sites of its own and more than 50 sales partners worldwide. Subsidiaries in France, the USA and China add to the international focus. The product range includes connectors, snap-action switches, contactors, command and indicating devices. Products are developed for specific orders and for series manufacture. The products are characterised by their high quality, excellent reliability and long working life. Schaltbau GmbH operates a certified quality management system under DIN EN ISO 9001 and an environmental management system according to DIN EN ISO 14001.
